Andrew Knoll received his PhD from Harvard University in 1977 and taught there for forty years before retiring in 2021. His research focuses on the early evolution of life, Precambrian environmental history, and the interconnections between the two. He has also worked extensively on the early evolution of plants, animals,... read moreand phytoplankton, as well as mass extinction. An avid astrobiologist, Knoll served on the science team for NASA’s MER mission to Mars. Professor Knoll’s research has been recognized through election to the US National Academy of Sciences, foreign membership in the Royal Society of London, the International Prize for Biology and the Crafoord Medal for geosciences.
