Ernesto Carafoli earned an MD degree at the University of Modena. He was postdoctoral Fellow with Albert Lehninger at the Johns Hopkins University, where he started working on calcium biochemistry. At the end of the 1990s he returned again to Italy as Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Padova. His main interest has always been the signaling role of calcium and its control, initially by mitochondria and later by membrane pumps, particularly those of the plasma membrane.
