Jim Kaufman attended the University of Washington in Seattle for a BSc in Chemistry, and then received a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard University in 1984, where he began a life-long interest in the evolution of immunity, with a focus on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). He... read moreworked many years each at the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland, at the Institute for Animal Health and at the University of Cambridge, both in the United Kingdom. He now is a professor in the Institute for Immunology and Infection Biology at the University of Edinburgh, with his groups in Cambridge and Edinburgh examining subjects around the MHC primarily in chickens, but also passerine birds, rabbits, Tasmanian devils and bats.
