Biography

Isaac P. Witz obtained a Master's degree in 1959 in Microbiology and Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in 1965 in Cancer Biology from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. From 1965 to 1968 he was a post-doctoral fellow at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, buffalo N.Y. in the field of cancer immunology. The scientific activities of Isaac Witz focus on the interactions between tumor cells and tumor microenvironmental factors such as components of the extracellular matrix, cytokines and immunocytes, and the involvement of such interactions in tumor progression and metastasis formation.

Isaac Witz has held visiting faculty positions at: The University of California, San Francisco, US; Karolinska Institute, SE; NCI, NIH, Bethesda, US; John Wayne Cancer Institute, Santa Monica, US; University of Vienna, AU; MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, US; and the University of Maryland, US.

At Tel Aviv University he served as member of the Board of Governors, the Chairman of the Department of Microbiology, the Chairman of the Department of Cell Research and Immunology, Dean of the faculty of Life Sciences, and Vice President for Research and Development. He was also the Founding head of the Tel Aviv University Cancer Biology Research Center,

Isaac Witz has served as President of the Israel Immunological Society, Chairman of the French-Israeli Scientific Cooperation in Immunology, Member of the National Human Experimentation Ethics Committee, and as a consultant of the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development. He has also served as Founding President of the Israel Association for Cancer Research, as a Member of the Scientific Committee of the German-Israeli Cooperation (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum - Ministry of Science) in Cancer Research and of the Board of Governors of the Israel Cancer Association.
