David Gray is Professor of Immunology at the University of Edinburgh and is currently Head of the School of Biological Sciences. David Gray received his PhD in Immunology working with Ian MacLennan in the University of Birmingham (1983) where he defined splenic marginal zone B cells as a novel subset. Following a short postdoc in Birmingham he became Scientific Member of the Basel Institute for Immunology in Basel, Switzerland, where he stayed for 6 years (1985-1991). He returned to the UK in 1991 to the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (Hammersmith Hospital, now Imperial College School of Medicine) as a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow. He moved to Edinburgh in 1998, where he has worked ever since. He was Head of the Institute for Immunology and Infection Research (part of the School of Biological Sciences) from 2008-2013 and was President of the British Society for Immunology between 2009 and 2013. In January 2014 he was appointed as Head of the School of Biological Sciences and is leading a major £110M project (‘Building a New Biology’) to renew the School’s estate.
