1 TalkBiography
Balaraman Kalyanaraman received his BS in chemistry from the University of Madras, India, and his MS from the Indian Institute of Technology. In 1978, he received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Alabama, USA, and postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Environmental Sciences in Research Triangle Park.... read moreIn 1981, he joined the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he now serves as Chairman and Professor of the Department of Biophysics, and Director of the Free Radical Research Center. He is a Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, Inc. Raman was the 2001 Recipient of International EPR Society Silver Medal for Outstanding Research in the Application of EPR in Biology and Medicine, and in 2005, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine. Raman's research interests are centered on the application of ESR and spin traps in free radical biology, synthesis and reactions of fluorescence probes, nitration/nitrosation and bicarbonate-mediated oxidative reations in biological systems, and understanding the role of free radicals, nitric oxide and cyclic nucleotides in signal transduction, proteasomal activation and apoptosis. Dr. Kalyanaraman serves as an Associate Editor for Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Free Radical Research, and Biochemical Journal.
