Biography

Dr. Ian Tizard is Emeritus University Distinguished Professor of Immunology in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Tizard received his BVMS from the University of Edinburgh; a BSc in Pathology from the University of Edinburgh and his PhD in Immunology from... read morethe University of Cambridge. In 1982 he moved to Texas A&M University to head the department of Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology.

In 1999 Dr Tizard, following a lifetime’s interest in birds was appointed Director of the Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center, at Texas A&M University. He has an active research program in infectious diseases and genomics of exotic birds. He has recently published a draft genome of the Scarlet Macaw. This program also encompasses active research programs in multiple countries in Central and South America.

In 1977, Dr Tizard wrote the first standard textbook on Veterinary Immunology. This text, now in its 9th edition, is used worldwide and has played a major role in establishing Immunology among the key disciplines of Veterinary Science.

He is an honorary diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. He was a University Distinguished Lecturer at Texas A&M University in 2006. He received an honorary DSc from the University of Guelph in Ontario in 2012.
