Biography

Jan-Willem Taanman is Associate Professor of Clinical Neurosciences at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology of University College London. He has a longstanding interest in the pathogenesis of mitochondria. This fascination was kindled during his PhD studies at the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and further developed during his postdoctoral... read morestudies at the University of Oregon (USA). Since 1994, Dr. Taanman has been working at the UCL Department of Clinical & Movement Neurosciences, initially on mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, but later on other paediatric mitochondrial diseases as well. Over the last decade, Dr. Taanman has also published on mitochondrial pathology of other neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Dr. Taanman has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, including in Nature Genetics, Lancet Neurology, Cell Reports and Stem Cell Reports.
