In 2005, Davey initiated a multidisciplinary program of research into podoconiosis (non-filarial endemic elephantiasis). The program has covered distribution, aetiology (genetic, mineralogical and biochemical), consequences (economic, social and ethical), and management of disease (diagnosis, clinical staging, treatment, and health systems). To date, over 75 research articles and 10 reviews and book chapters have arisen from this program. In 2010, Davey returned to the UK on a Wellcome Trust University Award and since then has expanded podoconiosis research beyond Ethiopia and advocated for the condition at national and global level.
