Beat Schwaller is currently the head of Anatomy in the Department of Medicine at the University of Fribourg and involved in teaching undergraduate Medical and Biomedical students. He received his undergraduate training in Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Bern, Switzerland, where he also carried out his PhD thesis... read morework. After a postdoctoral stay at the Weizmann Institute and working as a guest scientist at Roche, Basel, in 2000 he obtained his current position as an Associate Professor at the University of Fribourg. His main scientific interest is the role of calcium-binding proteins termed calcium buffers in their respective biological environment; i.e. in neurons, muscle cells, epithelial cells of the kidney and under pathological conditions in certain tumors including asbestos-induced mesotheliomas.
