Biography

Åke Lernmark received his medical doctorate from the University of Umeå in 1971. He has been a medical faculty member at the University of Chicago, Karolinska Institutet, University of Washington, and Lund University. He was Director of Research at the Hagedorn Research Laboratory in Gentofte, Denmark. Achievements include the demonstration... read moreof beta cell specific autoantigens, cloned human islet GAD65 and the development of a radio binding assay for GADA. HLA DQ was first demonstrated in his laboratory and the genetic dissection of the HLA region still continuous. Åke Lernmark has become a distinguished leader in the international effort to achieve a better understanding and a cure for this major scourge of humanity. In pursuit of this goal he has trained and inspired several generations of physicians and scientists and developed international centers of excellence, taking advantage of unique resources that can provide valuable information as well as patient populations for study. He is the PI for the Sweden arm of the multinational NIH supported The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study.
