Prof. Dr. Uwe-Karsten Hanisch was Chair in Dynamics of Brain Function at the University of Leipzig. Leipzig was where he started his career, studying biochemistry and neuroscience, and completing his PhD at the Paul Flechsig Institute for Brain Research. He then worked at McGill University and the Max-Delbruck Centre for... read moreMolecular Medicine before becoming a Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Lausitz in Senftenberg. In 2004 he was appointed Professor of Experimental Neurobiology at Göttingen, where he stayed until his return to Leipzig. He was an internationally renowned expert on microglia, and aside from his significant contributions to the research in this field, he was also a committed teacher to younger scientists. He sadly passed away suddenly on April 18th 2015 shortly after his appointment to the University of Leipzig, he is survived by his wife and 2 daughters.
