Philip Scheltens studied at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands, gaining his MD in 1984, and PhD (magnetic resonance imaging in Alzheimer's disease) in 1993. His main clinical and research interests are Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging and biomarkers. Dr. Scheltens is an active member of several societies including the Dutch Society for Neurology, the International Psychogeriatric Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the Alzheimer Imaging Consortium and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. He is associate editor of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry and book review editor of Alzheimer Disease and Associate Disorders. He is chief editor of the official journal of the Dutch Society of Neurology (Tijdschrift voor Neurologie en Neurochirurgie). He is also member of the editorial boards of Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders and International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, and acts as an ad hoc reviewer of scientific articles for, amongst others: The Lancet, Stroke, Neurology, Annals of Neurology and Science. Dr. Scheltens co-edited the book on Magnetic Resonance in Dementia (Springer) which is still the only book covering this topic in the broadest sense. He is also co-editor of the Dementia Annual series. He is Treasurer of the International Society for Vascular Behavioural and Cognitive Disorders (Vas-Cog) since 2003.
