Professor D. Robin Taylor lives in Edinburgh and is currently working for NHS Lanarkshire as a consultant respiratory physician. He returned to Scotland in 2013 after 25 years in New Zealand where he was Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Otago, Dunedin. In 2016 he was commissioned by NHS Lanarkshire to develop and implement a Treatment Escalation and Limitation Plan, aiming to improve quality of care in the medical and surgical wards of Lanarkshire hospitals. He has published several papers on this topic. His approach has involved one-to-one consultant coaching on medical decision-making and communication: prognostic conversations, avoiding futile treatments, harms reduction, and anticipatory care planning.
