Kristen Hawkes is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University Of Utah. Her ethnographic work among hunter-gatherers pointed to likely sex and age differences in the constraints and tradeoffs faced by ancestral foragers. Children's dependence on their grandmothers' work suggested a link between the nutritional help that human youngsters... read morerequire and the evolution of our distinctive longevity. That connection prompted her current focus on life history comparisons between humans and our closest living relatives, chimpanzees. She is a member of the Science and Grants Committee of the Leakey Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences (USA), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
