Prof. Pitt previously served as the Director of the Ion Channel Research Unit at Duke University, where he was Professor of Medicine, Neurobiology, and Pharmacology & Cancer Biology. Prof. Pitt was also an attending physician at Duke University Hospital and also cared for patients in the Adult Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before completing both internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship training at Stanford University Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Prof. Pitt’s research focuses on understanding the structure and function of ion channels and their regulatory subunits. His laboratory applies electrophysiology, biochemistry, structural biology, and animal models of human diseases to discern how aberrant ion channel function leads to diseases such as cardiac arrhythmias, ataxias, and epilepsy.
