Carol MacKintosh is a group leader in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit and Professor of Molecular Signaling in the University of Dundee. Her laboratory focuses on how reversible phophorylation and 14-3-3 proteins mediate mammalian cell responses to nutrients, insulin and growth factors. Dr. MacKintosh's general interests in how nutrients regulate... read moremetabolism, growth and development stems from her Ph.D. studies, with Prof. Hugh Nimmo at the University of Glasgow, on the branch-point between the tricarboxylic acid cycle and glyoxylate bypass in E. coli, and developed through her later work on plant responses to darkness. She therefore draws on case studies from both plant and human cells, and highlights how studying conserved proteins in different physiological contexts can help pinpoint common regulatory principles.
