Biography

Dr. Jay Self is an Associate Professor of Clinical and Experimental Sciences at the University of Southampton and a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at University Hospital Southampton. Dr. Self’s research has made major contributions to understanding the genetic and phenotypic basis of infantile nystagmus and albinism, including the development of the first NHS genomic testing panel for nystagmus and albinism, now used nationally. He has published extensively on improved diagnostic pathways, advanced electrophysiological and eye tracking techniques, and novel outcome measures that better capture functional vision in children. His work has directly shaped national clinical guidelines for the investigation and management of childhood nystagmus.

As Chief or Co Investigator on more than 20 clinical trials, Dr. Self integrates laboratory science, genomics, digital health and therapeutics.

Alongside his research, Dr. Self is a national leader in paediatric ophthalmology, serving as Chair of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Paediatric Subcommittee and Chair of the NIHR Paediatric and Neuro Ophthalmology Clinical Studies Group, helping shape UK policy, training, and research strategy.
