Abstract
Several high-profile crises and emergency situations in recent years have required Hewlett- Packard (HP) to put its emergency preparedness response and recovery (EP&R) programme into practice. This paper will outline HP’s experience of dealing with the SARS crisis that hit Toronto in 2003 and will serve as a framework for organisations that are now developing their plans for dealing with a potential influenza pandemic. The paper will also touch on the factors that drove HP to develop its EP&R programme using a management system approach.

Author's Biography
John Hollands is responsible for programmes and customer support at Hewlett-Packard’s Eastern and Western offices and the Toronto Computer Centres, as well as specific EH&S programmes. He is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional with more than 20 years of experience in EH&S. John is a member of the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals and the Industrial Accident Prevention Association. He graduated with a BSc in biology and holds certificates in human resource management and adult education. He is also a part-time Professor with the Faculty of Continuing Education, Science and Technology, at Seneca College in Toronto.
Rita Lauriola is responsible for the delivery of business continuity and recovery services within Canada. She provides additional support to HP customers worldwide for both IT disaster recovery and office recovery. Rita has been in IT service management since 1983, and has been dedicated to continuity planning since 1989. She has held several management positions alongside continuity planning, such as security management, problem and change management, and service reporting. Rita is well versed in ITSM methodology and holds an ABCP certificate. She has been an active member of the Disaster Recovery Information Exchange, Toronto Chapter, since its inception.
Mehboob Jaffer is responsible for advancing HP’s corporate reputation and executive visibility with external stakeholders across Canada. Mehboob manages media and analyst relations and executive speaking opportunities, supporting the senior leadership team in HP Canada. He also oversees corporate affairs communications — including corporate citizenship, social and environmental initiatives and crisis communications preparedness. Mehboob is a member of HP Canada’s Marketing and Marketing Communications Councils. Mehboob graduated from the University of Middlesex, UK and holds a BSc in electronics and business management.
