Abstract
Wildfires in California have been progressively increasing in duration, intensity and frequency. In response, a number of best practices have been developed for mitigating and responding to fires within the state. This paper describes the lessons learned within core capabilities and describes current practices. Reflections are offered as a consideration and should not be interpreted as standards of practice.

Author's Biography
Dana Carey manages the Yolo County Office of Emergency Services. For the last 15 years she has been responsible for various aspects of emergency planning in Yolo County. She has also been involved in many state and federal projects to enhance medical and health-related preparedness and response, and continues to participate in multiple advisory bodies, training committees and projects in the field of emergency preparedness.
Isamar Garcia is the Emergency Services Planner at the Yolo County Office of Emergency Services. She is a member of multiple emergency management associations and organisations, including the California Emergency Services Association (CESA) and the International Emergency Managers Association. Ms Garcia holds Associate Business Continuity Professional Certification from Disaster Recovery Institute International, and Emergency Management Specialist Certification from the California Specialized Training Institute/California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. she recently received the CESA President’s Award for her dedication and contributions to CESA as the Public Affairs Committee Chair.
