Business continuity management lessons learned from COVID-19

Abstract

This paper reviews how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted established best practices in the field of business continuity management (BCM). It reviews the lessons learned and provides suggestions on how business continuity programmes need to evolve in order to reflect the changed landscape. By walking through the BCM life cycle, the paper considers the various changes required at each phase of the BCM programme.

Author's Biography

Monica Goldstein is Founder of three business continuity companies: RecoveryPlanner, focused on cloud-based business continuity management software; CAPS Centers, focused on alternate sites and data-centre recovery; and most recently, New World Resilience, which focuses on business continuity consulting. After RecoveryPlanner was acquired by Agility Recovery Solutions in 2021, she spent a year as Vice President of Product Marketing before becoming a consultant for Agility’s business continuity planning engagements. Monica is a regular speaker at business continuity management conferences, including those run by the Business Continuity Institute, Disaster Recovery Journal and Continuity Insights.

Sherri Flynn is a full time Sr. Business Continuity and Resilience Analyst for American Tire Distributors. Prior to this, she provided consulting services on all aspects of the business continuity management life cycle, cyber response planning, crisis/incident response and vendor management, as well as regulatory compliance rules and regulations. She has also developed and facilitated organisation-wide business continuity training, corporate awareness and exercise programmes, and assisted in the preparation of state and federal audits and exams. She is a Certified Cyber Resilience Professional, Master Business Continuity Professional and Information Security Manager, ISO 22301 Lead Implementer, and received the Consultant of the Year award from DRI International in 2020.
