Abstract
Have you ever found a US$20 bill in your pocket or wallet that you did not know was there? This is the feeling we are hoping to give our campus partners with our new Fund Purpose Report. Being a large, decentralised university creates many challenges, one of them is how we get everyone on the same page in regard to how gift funds can be spent. This is the question we set out to answer four years ago. Our quest to solve this problem led us to an audit of every single gift fund we have, about 7,000 in total, and the creation of a dynamic report that is now being used across all four of our campuses, greatly impacting our campus spending. In this paper you will read about how we collected our data, how we added this data to our systems in a strategic way and how we transformed this data into a dynamic report.

Author's Biography
Liz Adler is the Data Manager for Gift Services at the University of Colorado Foundation. Liz leads all data-related Gift Services department projects and initiatives. This includes the gift compliance coding and audits, the management of the gift agreement workflow and the handling of special projects through developing and executing data queries, checks and process improvements. She has spent the last three years on a project aimed at providing campus partners with transparency into donor intent when a gift has been given to benefit the university. Liz was a recipient of the University of Colorado McCord Award in Excellence in December 2018 for her work with data and reporting on donor intent for campus partners.
Shannon McBratney is the Director of Gift Compliance at the University of Colorado Foundation. She has worked in philanthropy for over seven years, currently serves on the AASP’s Ethics Committee and is a 2018 McCord Award in Excellence for her work in gift compliance. As the Director of Compliance, Shannon assists in the development, implementation and management of the CU Foundation’s strategic plan for compliance which includes gift fund auditing, fund utilisation reporting, handling of special projects and educating campus partners on spending gift funds in compliance with donor intent. Prior to joining the CU Foundation, Shannon served as the Senior Records Specialist at the University of Denver and as a Collections Specialist at the Denver Art Museum.
