Alumni participation in an online COVID-19 course for first-year and transfer students

Abstract
College and university responses to the exceptional challenges of COVID-19 have varied from institution to institution. Utilising alumni and their disciplinary expertise in the delivery of course content is an underexploited form of alumni engagement. This paper describes significant alumni participation in an online course delivered in the summer prior to new students, first years and transfers, arriving on campus. We have also included student perception of the alumni modules and alumni reflection on their involvement in the course.

Author's Biography
Danny Kibble is the Executive Director of Alumni Relations, Engagement and Parent Giving at Butler University, a role he has held for five years. He is responsible for identifying and engaging those graduates and parents who have a high propensity to enter into a philanthropic relationship with the university. Before that, he worked for ten years leading alumni relations activities at Indiana University — Purdue University, Indianapolis. Danny received a Master of Public Administration from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and IUPUI and a BA in Public Relations from Indiana University — Bloomington.
Jennie Jones is the Director of Volunteer Engagement for the Office of Alumni Relations and Engagement at Butler University. She has been with Butler since 2006, and her responsibilities include oversight of the university’s volunteer communities and programming for alumni engagement. Jennie received her BA in Telecommunications Sales and Management from Ball State University and her MBA from Butler. She spent several years in the broadcasting industry before entering the field of higher education.
Anne M. Wilson has been a chemistry faculty member at Butler University for nearly 25 years, teaching organic chemistry and food chemistry. She earned her BA from Oberlin College and her PhD at the University of Utah. She has performed undergraduate research with over 60 undergraduates. Her research interests are varied, from food chemistry, to historical dyes, to small molecule synthesis. Maintaining relationships with alumni is one of the added perks of her job.
