Abstract
In the words of George Santayana: ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’.1 To navigate the future successfully, an understanding of the past is invaluable. This paper focuses on the stories of past disasters and the lessons they teach us. Such simple yet powerful lessons improve the ability to sell the importance of preparation. The paper focuses on trends discovered while teaching global leaders to prepare for disaster events. It is the stories that convince them to own their business continuity programme. These same stories can help management understand the importance of learning from the past.

Author's Biography
Joan H. Landry has worked in various industries and corporations over the past 25 years. Most recently, she has worked in crisis and business continuity management, supporting executive leaders in over 20 countries by providing creative and engaging crisis management training and exercises. She has worked with over 40 manufacturing, commercial, research and development and distribution sites to develop business continuity plans. Her work has appeared in the PM Network magazine and she has spoken at the Disaster Recovery Journal Fall World conferences. Landry is certified as both an MBCP and a PMP.
