Abstract
Self-care is a tool that helps employees function effectively during normal work conditions and — especially — during crisis situations and business interruptions. This paper will further define self-care, its relevance to business continuity and emergency management, and the benefits of including it as a part of formal training and pre- or post-intervention strategies. Finally, it provides best practice guidance on how to implement self-care protocols, including examples of current practice.

Author's Biography
Vali J. Hawkins Mitchell PhD, LMHC, is a certified traumatologist, licensed counsellor, executive and management coach, author, trainer, public speaker and artist. She consults for large and small businesses, individuals and teams, preparing them for local, regional and national emergencies. As the pioneer in the field of emotional continuity management, she is the author of ‘Emotional Terrors in the Workplace: Protecting Your Business’ Bottom Line’, and is well-published in business, healthcare and arts trade journals. Her specialities include emotional continuity management training, disaster mental health management, emotional terrorism in the workplace and many business, healthcare and art-related topics. She has completed a new book, ‘Managing Workplace Violence and Peacemaking’, and was recently appointed as adjunct faculty at Washington State University. An award-winning musician and assemblage artist, she is Executive Director of The Kirsha Foundation, a non-profit organisation providing free access to the fine arts for children and adolescents.
