Abstract
Metadata, information about content, are typically stored in various content management systems independently from documents themselves. A new breed of hybrid data systems – most notably the MarkLogic Enterprise NoSQL Server – make it possible to embed semantic metadata with published content, making such content both easier to locate and easier to relate to other documents. This paper illustrates both how such embedding can be done, and explores the benefits of using embedded metadata for content management. This paper not only uses the MarkLogic server as a reference for how this can be done, but also discusses alternative approaches.
