Strategic alignment of data and AI in corporate and investment banking : Driving value creation and competitive advantage
Abstract
This paper examines how corporate and investment banking (CIB) organisations can convert data and artificial intelligence (AI) investments into measurable commercial value by aligning technical capabilities with explicit business objectives. Its primary aim is to provide senior executives, programme sponsors, data and AI practitioners, compliance officers and operations leaders with a practical, governance-first framework to design, deploy and scale data-driven AI solutions that materially support revenue, cost, risk and client experience goals. The scope includes: the data— AI relationship and its economic implications; the core pillars of a data strategy (governance, quality, architecture, security); the components of an AI strategy (vision, infrastructure, talent, model governance); human-in-the-loop operating models; and the emerging spectrum of agentic AI, together with a phased, risk-aware approach to agent deployment. The paper combines conceptual synthesis with practitioner guidance, metrics, architectural patterns, control mechanisms and examples of measured impact, so that readers can operationalise the concepts in regulated CIB environments. Readers will leave with five actionable outcomes: (1) a method to map commercial key performance indicators (KPIs) to priority AI use cases; (2) a checklist of data foundations and architecture required for reliable model deployment; (3) a blueprint for embedding AI into end-to-end processes and operating models; (4) a set of phased risk controls and audit practices for safe agentic AI; and (5) a measurement framework to evaluate, iterate and scale initiatives. By foregrounding measurable outcomes, people-centred design and robust controls, the paper provides a roadmap for practitioners to turn clean, governed data into trustworthy models and models into auditable, repeatable commercial advantage. Laetitia Fournier is the Head of Data and Innovation at Natixis Corporate and Investment Banking. She leads strategic transformation projects leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to support corporate and investment banking (CIB) businesses in their evolution. She previously built up the Global Market Data and Agile Developments team, which focuses on data transformation projects, execution and algorithmic trading development as well as major evolutions of trading applications. Laetitia graduated from École Polytechnique and holds a Master of Science from MIT.
CFA, is Head of AI at Natixis Corporate and Investment Banking, responsible for deploying applied artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions across front-office workflows. He holds an MSc in engineering, finance and AI from Université Paris-Dauphine, where he has been lecturing since 2019. He previously served as Tech Lead in Data Science and as a market risk analyst. Lyes’s work lies at the intersection of AI, finance and product delivery, with a particular interest in operationalising models, AI governance and aligning AI initiatives with commercial key performance indicators (KPIs).
