Kwabena's research integrates pathogen biology, epidemiology, and public health microbiology to understand how bacterial pathogens respond to environmental and clinical pressures that drive persistence, antimicrobial resistance, and disease transmission. He has established an internationally recognised research programme in pathogen biology, molecular epidemiology, and antimicrobial resistance, supported by funding from the British Council, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, TWAS, Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research, the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the Medical Research Foundation. His expertise spans genomic surveillance, next-generation sequencing, molecular diagnostics, and bioinformatics, with a strong focus on translating research into public health practice. Kwabena completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2015 and has held research positions at the University of Cambridge, the University of Edinburgh, and the Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research in the United States. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and currently welcomes PhD students and collaborators interested in pathogen behaviour, antimicrobial resistance, and translational microbiology.
