Biography

Martin M Brown is Professor of Stroke Medicine at the UCL Institute of Neurology, University College London. He is also Consultant Neurologist at University College Hospital (UCH) and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, and Clinical Lead of the Thames Stroke Research Network. He has been... read moreinvolved in research to improve the prevention and treatment of stroke, particularly that caused by carotid artery atherosclerosis, for the last 20 years. He is the Chief Investigator of the International Carotid Stenting Study, which has led to the safe development of carotid stenting at over 50 centres in 16 countries in Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. His other research interests include randomized clinical trials, magnetic resonance imaging, and service provision. He has set up a comprehensive hyperacute stroke service, which provides one of the highest rates of thrombolysis in the country. The stroke care at his hospital was praised by the influential Dr. Foster organization in 2007 as one of the country’s top five services. He has also played a major role in establishing training of physicians in stroke medicine. He has received more than £3 million in grant funding over the last 5 years and has over 160 scientific publications, including 4 books.
