Biography

Prof. Urvi Desai serves as the director for Levine Children’s NM program and Carolinas MDA Care Center (Adult and Pediatric) at Atrium Health and a Professor of Neurology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She obtained her graduate medical degree at MS University, India followed by residency in Neurology... read moreand fellowship in Neuromuscular Disorders/EMG at UNC Chapel Hill.

She was the Pioneer Neurology Faculty at Atrium health for the CLIC clerkship program for UNC School of Medicine. She has established subspecialty physicians and allied health team collaborations in multidisciplinary Adult and Pediatric MDA clinics at Atrium health. She is actively engaged with AANEM having served and serving on committees like symposia, abstract review digital media education, program, EDX SAE and Quality improvement committee as well as NEAL’s ventilation committee. She is the recipient of MGFA Partners in Care and CMT/HNF Center for Excellence as well as the ‘researcher of the year’ for the contributions in growing the Neuromuscular research portfolio to become the largest component of Neuroscience research at Atrium Health. She has participated in AAMC’s midcareer women faculty development seminar and graduated from the McColl physician leadership institute.

She serves on the Advisory Board for the North Carolina site for MD STAR-Net, a CDC-funded network that conducts public health surveillance of muscular dystrophy. She is a member of GRASP (Genetic Resolution and Assessments Solving Phenotypes)- LGMD consortium. She serves as the principal investigator for multiple clinical trials, in MG, CIDP, DMD, SMA, hereditary TTR Amyloidosis, CMT, and LGMD.
