Biography

Koji Nakanishi was the Centennial Professor of Chemistry at Columbia University. He received his BSc and PhD from Nagoya University and carried out his postgraduate work at Harvard University. He was known for developing new spectroscopic methods to analyse natural products. His group determined the structures of more than 200... read morebiologically active compounds, many of which occur in minuscule quantities. Nakanishi received numerous prizes, including the Order of Culture medal from the Emperor of Japan. In 1996, ACS and the Chemical Society of Japan established the Nakanishi Prize in honor of his lifetime of achievements. He sadly passed away aged 93 in March 2019.
