After faculty roles at Harvard (Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he joined Michigan in 2003, later directing the Comprehensive Diabetes Center. His research focuses on molecular and cell-biological mechanisms that support pancreatic beta-cell survival and expansion under secretory pathway stress, with the aim of developing therapies—including small-molecule interventions—to enhance insulin production and mitigate the severity of type 1A and type 1B diabetes.
