Dr. Ruotolo earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Louis University and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He completed postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge as the inaugural Waters Research Fellow before joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2009.

Ruotolo’s research group focuses on advancing ion mobility–mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and related techniques to probe the three-dimensional structure and stability of proteins, protein complexes, and biotherapeutics. Notably, his work on collision-induced unfolding (CIU) has created powerful new tools for structural analysis in proteomics and drug discovery. His scientific contributions are reflected in over 100 peer-reviewed publications and multiple prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award, Eli Lilly Award in Analytical Chemistry, ASMS Research Award, Protein Society Young Investigator Award, and the Agilent Thought Leader Award.

Dr. Ruotolo is active in mentoring students and developing innovative mass spectrometry methodologies that bridge analytical chemistry with structural biology and pharmaceutical science.
