Biography

Jonathan Widom received his BA in Chemistry from Cornell University and his PhD in Biochemistry from Stanford University. He was a Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral Fellow with Sir Aaron Klug at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. He then joined the faculty of the University of Illinois,... read moreUrbana-Champaign, with appointments in the Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biophysics and in the Beckman Institute. In 1991, he moved to Northwestern University, where he was the William and Gayle Cook Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology and Chemistry Department. His research investigated the biophysical chemistry of DNA and protein-DNA complexes, with a specific focus in the area of chromosome structure and gene regulation. Prof. Widom passed away in July 2011 and is survived by his brother and sister.
