Robert Gallo is the Founder and Director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland Baltimore. Dr. Gallo is the eminent scientist who became world famous two decades ago when he co-discovered that the HIV virus was the cause of AIDS. Prior to becoming Director of the Institute in 1996, Dr. Gallo spent 30 years at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute, where he was Head of its Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology. Dr. Gallo has received numerous prestigious scientific awards including the Albert Lasker Award in Medicine.
