Biography

Melanie H. Cobb attended the University of Chicago where she obtained a BS in biochemistry and an unflagging interest in hormone action. She obtained a PhD in biological chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis working with Garland Marshall from whom she gained a strong interest in protein structure and... read morefunction. Following postdoctoral work with Ora Rosen in New York working on insulin signaling mechanisms, she joined the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the department of pharmacology. Her focus on hormonal signal transduction pathways led her to the isolation of MAP kinases and an ongoing effort to understand the regulation and structural properties of protein kinase cascades. In 1997 she became the holder of the Jane and Bill Browning Chair in Medical Science at Southwestern.
