Biography

Mark Pepys studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College Cambridge and Medicine at University College Hospital Medical School, before doing his PhD in Immunology at Cambridge. He has worked on amyloidosis and acute phase proteins since 1975 and established the Immunological Medicine Unit in the Department of Medicine at the Royal... read morePostgraduate Medical School in 1977, which became a world leading centre for basic and clinical research in these fields. After his invention of labelled serum amyloid P component scintigraphy for diagnosis and monitoring of amyloidosis in 1988, the Unit became the de facto UK national referral centre for amyloidosis. In 1999 he moved with his whole team to the Royal Free and University College Medical School to head the Department of Medicine and set up the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Proteins in which he established the UK National Health Service National Amyloidosis Centre.
