After his invention of labelled serum amyloid P component scintigraphy for diagnosis and monitoring of amyloidosis in 1988, the Unit became the de facto UK national referral centre for amyloidosis. In 1999 he moved with his whole team to the Royal Free and University College Medical School to head the Department of Medicine and set up the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Proteins in which he established the UK National Health Service National Amyloidosis Centre.
