His research interest is the pathogenesis of allergies and asthma. He has made major contributions in the field of the origin of asthma, with regard to the pre- and postnatal environment. 2012/13 he was Visiting Professor and Fulbright Scholar at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Since 2010 he serves as Associated Editor of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI, IF 12.5). Since 2015 he is Medical Director and CMO of the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH, Campus Marburg. From 2010 to 2016 he was President of the German Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI) and since 2016 he is Past President of the German Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
