Biography

Sharachchandra (Sharad) Lele got a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay, an M.S. from IISc on the environmental impacts of large dams, and a Ph.D. in Energy and Resources from UC Berkeley on sustainable forest use in the Western Ghats. He is currently a Distinguished Fellow in Environmental Policy... read more& Governance at the Centre for Environment and Development at ATREE, Bengluru, and an Adjunct Professor at Indian Institute for Science Education & Research Pune and Shiv Nadar University Delhi. Sharad is an interdisciplinary environmental researcher, bridging the natural sciences, economics, and political science to understand the concepts of and pathways to environmentally sustainable and socially just development. He has worked on sustainable forest management and forest governance, forest hydrology and farmer linkages, landuse change, watershed development, water governance, urban water management and pollution regulation. He has published in a range of interdisciplinary environmental journals, and in several books including “Rethinking Environmentalism: Linking Justice, Sustainability and Diversity” (MIT Press: 2018) and “Democratizing Forest Governance” (OUP, 2014). He is heavily engaged in environmental policy-related work at the local, state and national level. He is the co-Chair of the international Expert Writing Group convened by the International Science Council, FutureEarth and Stockholm Environment Institute to write the “letter from science to humanity” that was released on the occasion of Stockholm+50.
