Professor MacDonald attended McGill University in Montreal, receiving three degrees BSc, MSc and then MDCM (Medicine). He completed post-graduate training in Clinical Genetics and Ophthalmology in Ottawa, Canada before moving to Edmonton in 1992 where he practices Ocular Genetics as a major clinical and research activity.
