Biography

Barry Schoub, Professor Emeritus of Virology, University of Witwatersrand, was the founding Director of the country’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases [NICD]. He served on a number of International Public Health bodies and was an adviser to the World Health Organisation for various viral diseases and pandemic preparedness. Amongst many... read morenational and international awards he was invested in the Order of Mapungubwe, the country’s highest honour, in recognition of” invaluable contributions to medical science, virology and infectious diseases”. Rotary International has awarded him the Paul Harris award. He was the 2021 recipient of the gold medal of the Academy of Science of South Africa. He has twice won the Jewish Achievers of South Africa Award and the Samson-Kaplan community service award. He has published 300 scientific publications and several books and chapters in books. Currently he Chairs the South African Ministerial Advisory Committee on Covid-19 vaccines.
