Richard Odame Phillips is Associate Professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and Scientific Director for the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research into Tropical Medicine at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. He studied Medicine at KNUST and has a Doctorate from... read morethe University of London (UK) in the area of Infection and Immunity. He is a Physician, and has Fellowships with the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has practiced Medicine as a Consultant in Infectious Diseases at the Medicine Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana.
He leads a research group addressing topics in the area of infectious diseases particularly M. ulcerans disease (Buruli ulcer), HIV, and Hepatitis B and C infection. He has received several awards including the prestigious Wellcome Trust Training Research Fellowship for Scientists from Developing Countries (2002), British Infection Society Spring Meeting London UK (2003), the Royal Society UK-Ghana Networking and Leverhulme Trust award (2008 and 2010), EFINTD fellowship (2008), and the prestigious Africa Research Leader award from the MRC, UK (2012). His current research is sponsored by a Senior Fellowship Award as part of the EDCTP2 programme supported by the European Union. He has trained Master and PhD students and has co-authored several peer reviewed articles on Buruli ulcer covering, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. He was co-principal investigator on the WHO led study that investigated oral antibiotic therapy for treating Buruli ulcer.
