His research has included major projects in wilderness areas, including legally designated ones. He has been an advisor about environmental issues to a number of nations in addition to his own, the USA.

He developed the first successful computer ecological model, a software program called JABOWA, working with two scientists, James Wallis and James Janak, at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA. This software has been accurately validated, has been used in various formats by many scientists around the world. U.S. federal agencies had him use this software as one of the first methods to test the possible effects, forecast by global climate models, of climate change on ecosystems.
