Pak Sham is Professor of Psychiatric and Statistical Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London. He was made Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry in 1993, through a University Award from the Wellcome Trust, and was subsequently conferred the titles of Reader (1998) and Professor... read more(2000). He has authored or co-authored over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals. His research has addressed various questions in psychiatric nosology, epidemiology and genetics, using sophisticated statistical techniques. Examples are the use of latent class analysis to derive subtypes of schizophrenia and the use of Poisson regression to examine the relationship between prenatal exposure to influenza epidemics and the future rate of schizophrenia. He has also contributed to the development of novel statistical methodology for molecular genetic studies of complex traits. The focus of his current research is the development of statistical methodology for genetic analysis of quantitative traits and complex diseases, and the application of this methodology to several studies including a major MRC-funded project to map quantitative trait loci for anxiety and depression. He is the author of "Statistics in Human Genetics" (Arnold, 1997) and co-editor of "Analysis of Multifactorial Disease" (Bios, 2000).
