Biography

Dr Roderick l Beijersbergen – The Netherlands Cancer institute, NL Roderick Beijersbergen is associate professor at the division of Molecular Carcinogenesis and head of the NKI Robotics and Screening Center. He received his undergraduate training at leiden University and obtained his PhD from Utrecht University on the study of the... read morecontrol of the cell cycle by the Rb familiy of pocketproteins. During his post-doc in the lab of Dr Weinberg at the Whitehead Institute, USA, he was involved in the identification of the catalytic subunit of telomerase and studied its role in human tumorigenesis. In 1999, he returned to the Netherlands Cancer Institute where his work focussed on the development and application of functonal genomic technologies to identify novel targets for cancer therapy, to understand the mechanism of action of novel drugs and to gain understanding of potential mechanisms of resistance. He pioneered large scale pooled shRNA screens and several of the findings of this work have been translated into the clinic.
