Greenman graduated at Liverpool University in 1973 with an honours degree (BSc) in Microbiology. He then continued his studies at Liverpool obtaining a PhD in Oral Microbiology in 1976. He then gained employment as a Scientific Research Officer at Leeds University (Department of Microbiology and Leeds General Infirmary), studying the... read moregrowth and physiology of cutaneous microbial species and their relationship to health and disease conditions of the skin (acne vulgaris). In 1979, Greenman was appointed as a senior lecturer in medical microbiology at Bristol Polytechnic with an opportunity to integrate applied research with the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in applied biological and biomedical sciences. In 1992 Greenman was appointed as Reader in Medical Microbiology, and then Professor of Microbiology in 2001.
During the last decade or so, Greenman’s work has continued to focus on in vitro continuous culture models of biofilms, where the microcosm is derived from natural systems (oral cavity, skin, wound infections, urine) where the system behaves in a similar manner to conditions found in vivo. He has been an associate of the Royal College of Pathologists and a member of the Society for General Microbiology, Society of Applied Microbiology, International Association of Dental Research, British Society for Dental Research and a key member of the International Society for Breath Odor Research (ISBOR) where he became President from 2007-2009. Over the last 10 years, Greenman has been either principal investigator or co-investigator in over a dozen externally funded research projects generating a total income in excess of £5 million.
Over his whole career he has published ~200 research papers, 10 book chapters, two patents, and has co-edited the proceedings of two international conferences, has served on two editorial boards of Journals and continues to review grant applications and has refereed papers in microbiology and biotechnology areas for several journals (>12) over this time. Greenman has supervised over 35 PhD students, 20 of these as director of studies and first supervisor. Much of his applied research over the years is in collaboration with industry, resulting in many contracts and grants.
