Biography

David Nicholls has been active in mitochondrial research for 40 years. Highlights include the elucidation of the uncoupling pathway for brown fat thermogenesis and the discovery of UCP1, the description of the mechanism by which mitochondria buffer cytoplasmic calcium, the bioenergetics and regulation of exocytosis of isolated nerve terminals (synaptosomes)... read moreand most recently the development of techniques to monitor mitochondrial bioenergetics in intact cells and in neurons in particular. He is the co-author of the standard textbook on bioenergetics (Bioenergetics 3) and is currently Professor of Mitochondrial Physiology at the Buck Institute for Age Research in California.
