Among other areas, research has focused on the biochemical and molecular genetic analysis of a series of respiration-deficient Chinese hamster cells isolated in the laboratory. These became model systems for the study of the assembly of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Immo Scheffler is the author of a comprehensive book on mitochondria, now available in a second edition (Wiley-Liss, 2008). He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
