Biography

Rick Dijkhuizen is a neurobiologist who received his PhD at Utrecht University in 1998 on 'Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy in Experimental Cerebral Ischemia'. From 1999 until 2002 he worked at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital/Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Harvard Medical School, first as a... read morepostdoctoral fellow and later as instructor. There his research focused on elucidating spontaneous and therapy-induced recovery after stroke with different MRI techniques in patients and animal models. In 2002, he became Group Leader of the Biomedical MR Imaging and Spectroscopy laboratory at the UMC Utrecht. His current research activities involve application of various MR techniques (e.g, fMRI, DTI, molecular MRI, fMRS) to study (patho)physiology of cerebrovascular disorders in animal models and human subjects, with a particular focus on neuroplasticity and neuroinflammation.
